Tooting My Horn

To toot your own horn is to brag about your talents, simply put. I think the phrase may have originated from the traditional fanfare that would happen in ancient times whenever a person who did something heroic stepped onto a podium to accept a medal. The people blowing their horns for this person or group of people is a form of congratulations and shows no self-pride, but if the congratulated blow their own horn, they are congratulating their self and trying to appear better than everybody else.

I never toot my own horn. Most of what I would want to say about myself I keep inside, being difficult to put into words. Maybe it’s my conservative nature or not liking to boast, but I just don’t feel the need to brag about my accomplishments. That’s up to someone else to tackle, someone who probably has so much more interesting stuff to talk about than I do, someone with way more success than I can dream of.

It’s very hard for me to express myself out loud. I tend to always crawl back into a shell. This is why public speaking has always been a challenge for me. I hate having to pull myself out of my comfort zone, subjecting myself to a room of stares, getting that nervous feeling. The fear of being judged and critiqued, being placed under a hot microscope, is frightening. These days though, I am a lot better and feel more confident in showing off my skills because why the hell not when everybody else does it effortlessly? Blowing your horn is basically the only way you can get anywhere. If you have a job interview, you might as well bring it all and convince the man or woman with the keys that you are definitely worthy. Famous people are always bragging about their selves to inflate their ego.

I can, however, express myself fairly well in written words:

I can shake it

I can roll it

I can wing it

I can drop it

There’s a comet

There’s a cupid

I don’t mean to sound stupid

And the greatest thing about me

Is not the way I talk

Or the way I write

It’s how I always

Get back up

Even when bringing a knife to a fight

Toot Your Horn
